The Probe

The Earth's Field NMR probe is constructed using durable PVC coil formers and is designed for use inside and outside the lab.  The probe can take samples of up to 75 mm in diameter. The three coils in the probe are in order

  1. The B1 coil.  The inner most coil of the probe is for transmitting the excitation pulses and receiving the NMR signal. 
  2. The graident coil.  The middle coil provides a magnetic field gradient alng the direction of the solenoid axis.  The gradient strength is 2.4 mT m-1 A-1
  3. The pre-polarising coil.  The outer visibile coil provides a large magnetic field to increase the initial magnetisation of the nuclear spins so that a signal can be detected.
